Does anybody know of a place in the Ottawa area to buy a 30-40 pound pig?

It might be tough to find one that small this time of year, There must be several butcher shops that could probably steer you in the right direction.

I can order one from my local butcher, but the prospect of paying $150.00 for a 20-30 pounder is what's killing me. I guess that's the way it is. Seems a little spendy when 30% of it or more is probably wasted.

Have you tried contacting Lavergne Western Beef out in Navan? You might find it worth the drive...

Actually found a place called Fletchington Farms near Cobden that is able to hook me up. Gonna be up that way on the long week-end. Totally stoked to smoke my first swine!!!!

pigs are raised all year long at in farrow to finish barns so it doesnt matter what time of the year it is ..small pigs are expensive because you are processing them way before their their market time so the farmer has to be compensated .
that is why suckling pigs are 80 t0 100 dollars

That makes sense, I was thinking of a small operation that only raised a few pigs, my only real experience with swine, was working for a bank.
